Obesity can risk Gastric Reflux Disease

Italian scientists from the University La Sapienza of Rome discovered that obesity might increase the risk of Gastric Esophageal Reflux Disease(GERD) especially in women.

GERD is said to be a disease where the gastric contents reflux to the esophagus abnormally causing mucosal damage. This causes heartburn and burning discomfort within your chest.

Previous studies have shown that fatty foods produce a prolonged inhibitory effect on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), particularly following intra-duodenal lipid
perfusion, but this inhibitory effect would appear due to a cholecystokinin-mediated action on LES.

Since oestrogen can also inhibit the LES, Dr. Corazziari suggested that concentration of this hormone may be a possible explanation of increased GERD prevalence in obese females, said the report published in World Journal of Gastroenterology.
