Childhood (Pediatric) Obesity: An Epidemic In America

Already 15% of American kids and adolescents are obese. This is taking a form of epidemic in the country. So it is high time we get ourselves informed about it so that we are able to aim for a better fight against it.

Childhood (Pediatric) Obesity: An Epidemic In America

There are a number of factors to blame starting from lack of physical activities to availability of calorie rich fast foods that lead to obesity in kids. Other important factors are: sedentary lifestyle, genetics, socio-economic, eating habits etc. These are some of the diseases that are common in obese kids:

• Early onset of puberty

• Eating disorders

• Insulin resistance

• Cardiovascular disease

• Type 2 diabetes

• High LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels; low HDL cholesterol

• Hypertension

• Cholecystitis

• Fatty liver disease

• Orthopedic problems

• Sleep apnea

• Symptoms of depression

• Stroke

• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

• Possible increased risk of cancer

The thing to worry about is that few obese children lose their obesity as they grow up. Infact, more than 30% obesity begins as pediatric obesity.

How to fight Chilhood Obesity?

Though it is up to parents how they train their kids’ eating habits, the schools can also come to aid in this matter by banning sale of fast food and carbonated drinks on campus. Some legislation work has already been done in some parts but the actions should be taken with more heavy handedness.
