Apart from obesity being the 2nd leading cause of death in the U.S.A resulting in almost 300,000 deaths each year, it can also damage your body and shorten your life span. Obesity can lead to a number of diseases. The most common of them are discussed here.
Obesity Related Diseases
Here is a list of the most common obesity related diseases :
- Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus : Obesity obstructs insulin to work in our bodies whiuch result in type 2 Diabetes. 95% of patients are found to be obese. Excess sugarlevels badly damage the circulatory system.
- High Cholesterol : It is a very harmful disease , due to this the low density cholesterol stick to the artery walls to build up a layer. This layer hardens with time and allows less passage to blood leading to high blood pressure, coronary heart disease that may lead to strokes or attacks.
- Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure : The hearts of obese people have to work harder than it was designed to, this weaken the heart and kidney. If an obese person has high blood pressure then the risk of strokes increases to a great extent.
- Osteoarthritis or Degenerative Arthritis : The weight bearing joints have to carry more weight leading to inflammation and joint damage.
- Sleep Apnea : This is a condition where excess fat in neck and tongue relax during sleep making it difficult to breath. This will make one slow and sluggish during the day due to lack of sleep.
- Heartburn and Acid Indigestion : Overeating often weakens the valve at the top of our stomachs. If this is untreated it may lead to esophageal cancer.
- Urinary Stress Incontinence: A large abdomen means weak abdominal muscles. Due to this your urinary bladder may weaken so much that urine might leak while sneezing, coughing or laughing.
