Fructose and Obesity Problem

Posted on July 30, 2009 in Latest News

Fructose is a sweetener found naturally in honey and fruits.  It is also added to soft drinks, soda, sport drinks, candy, and toppings etc. in the form of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HCFS). There have been allegations that fructose causes obesity. Some studies conducted on animals showed that fructose and obesity are closely related. However, the results have been mixed and experts say that fructose may not be the reason behind the obesity epidemic.

Fructose-Obesity Problem:
How does fructose cause obesity? Some studies suggested that fructose may trigger a hormonal response which in turn causes obesity. Other studies suggest that fructose may increase the appetite, thus making people eat more. Till date the research results have been mixed, some studies showing positive results and some showing negative.

Experts opine that sweet in any form can be fattening. Hence, there is no point in avoiding fructose. The focus should be on cutting down fructose from your diet. This can be done by reducing sugary drinks and processed foods from your diet.

Another argument is that processed foods such as cakes, cookies and other sugary drinks contain other hidden calories which might be contributing to the obesity problem. Hence, the solution would be to consume more fruits and vegetables. Do not replace milk, fruit juice, with sugary drinks as it can add calories.

Fructose may not more harmful than other sweeteners. Consuming any sweetner would add calories. Hence, avoid sweetened foods if you are planning to lose weight. Food products having the labels ending with “ose” indicates a sugar additive; such foods should be avoided.
