Yoghurt offers several health benefits such as protection against ulcers, bone building, and increases immune response. Yoghurt may also aid in weight loss as it is rich in calcium. However, yoghurt contains fat, and so manufacturers have come up with low-fat yoghurt or lite yoghurt. These products are promoted as a good means of weight loss. But do they really work?
Low Fat Yoghurt and Weight Loss:
When low fat yoghurt products in the market were examined by the Choice magazine, it was found that they were having added sugars. Even though these products had low-fat, the manufacturers added sugar to the yogurt, making it fattening. This can slow down the efforts of those who are planning to lose weight.
Why was sugar added to low fat yogurt products? Several of these products had flavoring and this required adding extra sugar.
The investigation revealed that while some manufacturers added 2 teaspoons of sugar, others added up to 7 teaspoons of sugar in their yoghurt products. This increased the total calories in low-fat yoghurt. In fact such low fat yoghurts have more calories than normal yoghurt.
Choosing a Good Low-Fat Yogurt:
Added sugar can increase the calorie intake and can slow down your weight loss efforts. Hence, see the labels and check for added sugar before you reach for your favorite brand of yoghurt. You can also choose plain yoghurt products instead of flavored ones. This will help you to choose the best low fat yoghurt which can aid in overcoming obesity.
