Childhood obesity is the most common problem in America. If there is an increase in the rate of obesity then it is an indication that obesity related chronic diseases also become very common. There are many risks of childhood obesity. Being obese, makes the child prone to a number of diseases.

  • Asthma:

    If you go through statistics then you might notice that most of the children who are obese suffer from asthma.

  • Diabetes:

    Adult onset diabetes also called type 2 diabetes has become very common among obese children and adolescents. According to a study done by Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that one out of every three children in America develop diabetes throughout their lifetime.

  • Gallstones:

    The occurrence of gall stones are higher among the obese when compared to the common people.

  • Heart Diseases:

    Atherosclerosis is the disease of the arteries that begins in early childhood and continues to adolescence. It is related to high cholesterol levels that is related to poor eating habits and obesity.

  • High Blood Pressure:

    Children who are overweight have a greater risk of having high blood pressure, which in turn can strain the heart.

  • Liver Problems:

    Obesity can result in liver problems, which can result in cirrhosis of liver a chronic liver disease.

  • Menstrual Problems:

    If a girl is overweight then there are chances that she reach her puberty at an early stage, which can cause uterine fibroids or menstrual problems in the later part of her life.

  • Sleeping Problems:

    Children who are overweight are at a greater risk of suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. This is a potentially life-threatening condition, where the breathing gets interrupted during sleep. After a long period of time this can result in heart failure.

  • Metabolic Syndrome:

    There are many metabolic syndrome like insulin resistance, high blood pressure and abnormal lipid levels that a child can suffer due to obesity.

Overweight children tend to become overweight or obese adults in the future. But the good news is that children can lose weight by making certain lifestyle changes and reverse the side effects of obesity. So, prevent childhood obesity in the initial phase of life because prevention is the key factor in preventing obesity.
