Types of Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery options fall under the category of bariatric weight loss surgery. These are classified s restrictive or malabsorptive procedures. They include:

Restrictive Procedures:

These procedures reduce the size of the stomach and make you feel satiated even if you eat less food. This makes you stay full for longer period of time. These are some of the surgery options and they are:

  • Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
  • Gastroplasty
  • Gastric Banding or Lap Band surgery
  • Gastric Bypass surgery that is short limb or proximal or Roux-en-Y (RNY)

Mal-absorptive Procedures:

Restrictive or malabsorptive procedures occur as a result of permanent changes in the size of stomach that is the anatomical size. The size of the stomach is reduced and the small intestines are shortened. The smaller intestines and stomach gives you a feeling of fullness, even if you eat less. This change in the size of the intestines helps in the reduction in the caloric intake, which makes the absorption process to take place at a faster rate. These are some of the weight loss surgery options under malabsorptive procedures:

  • Duodenal switch
  • Biliopancreatic Diversion

Combination of Mal absorptive and Restrictive Procedures:

These reduces the intake of food, which happens as a result of reduced absorption of food. The surgical option that fall under this category are distal or long limb gastric bypass.

Gastric Bypass Surgery:

This is the most commonly performed surgery in the United States. According to the U.S. statistics, more than 90 percent of the surgeries performed for weight loss are gastric bypass. This procedure is done by connecting the stomach to the lower part of the small intestines. This is done bypassing some part of the jejunum and duodenum. The part between the pouch of the stomach and proximal small intestines are called roux limb”. The length of the roux limb differs in long limb that is distal and in short limb that is proximal gastric bypass. Distal gastric bypass or the long limb procedures can result in more malabsorption than the proximal or short limb gastric bypass. It has great results because in more than 80% of patients weight loss is observed that is more than 50%. These procedures are performed either laparoscopically or through the open method.

Tummy Tucks or Abdominoplasty:

Tummy tucks are another great option for the removal of excessive fats and skin from the lower abdominal area. The fat part is excised surgically and are made firmer.

This is another technique used to reduce the fat present in any part of the body. The fat under the arms, chin, face, arms, buttocks, thighs, etc are reduced by liposuction procedures. Here are some of the surgeries performed:

  • Body Contouring
  • Breast reduction surgery
  • Buttock liposuction

These are some of the

weight loss surgery options.

However, there are certain risks related to these surgeries as well. So, all you can do is to discuss with your surgeon about the outcome of these surgeries and try to avoid the risks.
