by Alberto “Beto” Perez who was a dancer and choreographer in Colombia in the 1990s. It has been used to seamlessly fuse fitness and fun.

It essentially incorporates dance moves from famous dance styles like salsa, hip-hop, samba, mambo, bollywood and belly dancing moves. On the fitness front, it is filled with aerobic moves and includes muscle toning squats and lunges.

The body moves to the rhythm of the music which is intermittently fast and slow to incorporate the benefits of interval training. A lot of instructors add in steps with weights to incorporate the benefits of strength and resistance training.

What are the advantages of using Zumba for weight loss?

  • Take a class of this Latin culture inspired dance at least three to five times a week. It will improve your cardiovascular fitness levels. You will be able to hold your breath longer and improve your stamina. The fast paced moves help the heart rate get into the cardiovascular zone where the calories burnt by the body can amount to weight loss.
  • The fast and slow pace brings in the advantage of interval training. More and more experts indicate that interval training is the ideal way to exercise and lose weight.
  • If your instructor has incorporated weights in your regime, you will also engage in strength training. Muscles are the best fat burners. Muscles need a lot of energy for sustenance. When your muscles are worked out a lot of calories from the food you eat and from the fat stored in your body goes towards the muscles. It helps to spike up the metabolism and brings about weight loss.

A lot of people, who find going to the gym less-than-exciting, have been pleased with the energy, excitement and results of Zumba.
