Skipping Meals Can Make You Gain Weight

For some, the act of weight loss can be a game of desperation. In the United States, more than half of the nation’s population is overweight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that approximately one third of the population is obese. When many of these individuals try to lose weight, they take a path we should not travel. This path is skipping meals. When in reality, skipping meals can actually cause you to gain weight. The two most definite strategies of weight loss include watching what you eat so that your calorie intake is smaller and exercising more so that you expend more calories.

Why does skipping meals lead to weight gain?

  • Not eating meals can lower your metabolism. A high metabolism is what causes your body to burn off more calorie throughout the day. Starving gives the body a signal that food is not available. Whenever the next proper meal is consumed, the body stores most of the energy derived from food as fats for future use rather than using it up in an effort to concern energy. This is known as going into “survival mode.”
  • Not eating regularly can also cause your muscle mass to dwindle. Muscles are known as one of the best fat burners. Muscles require a lot more calories for regular sustenance. A consistent supply of energy in the form of food is needed to sustain muscle mass and maintain the increased metabolic rate. Not eating meals and skipping meals will lead to wastage of muscle mass. This will also have a debilitating effect on the body. Your body may not be able to perform at the same rate you are used to performing at.
  • Not eating consistently causes the blood sugar to drop erratically. Skipping meals causes a drop in the supply of sugar or energy to the vital organs in the body. This causes symptoms like headache, low level of alertness, mental confusion and general weakness. This pattern eventually slows down the insulin release from the pancreas, which can ultimately lead to diabetes.
  • The inconsistency or spikes in the blood sugar levels are also responsible for episodes hedonistic hunger. Every time you skip a meal, your chance of overeating during the next meal becomes doubled. This because your body is hungry and in need of food. Many will justify eating a large meal because they skipped the previous meal.

Planning out properly portioned and nutritious meals throughout the day are an important to any weight loss strategy.
