According to latest research findings teenage obesity in America is increasing drastically. The rates at which teenage obesity is increasing are stunning. About 15%, to give exact figures 9 million teens in America below 15 years are obese. This figure is almost three times the teen obesity figures in 1980.
Causes of Teen Obesity:
There are several teenage obesity causes. The main reasons for teenage obesity are – overeating, less activity or inactivity, excess TV viewing. If a teen eats and drinks more than the body needs, the excess energy stores in the form of body fat. And, adding to this if the teen is not doing enough regular exercise, it worsens the problem. Many television studies have shown teens having a television in their bedrooms have the tendency to watch it more which leads to inactivity, the main culprit of teenage obesity.
How to Prevent Teen Obesity?
Reverse the cause o teenage obesity. It offers the solutions to treat the teen obesity problem. Eat healthy diet. Avoid eating fast food and junk food, which is a common tendency during teenage. Do regular exercise. It’s important not just to avoid obesity but also to stay active throughout the day. Teens have to involve in many activities in a day, which requires them to be active. And, avoid watching TV or using computer for longer durations.
Parents’ Role in Teen Obesity
All children tend to develop the habits which are followed by their parents. So parents have to play a better role in avoiding the obesity problem by guiding them to have healthy dietary habits and do regular exercise. Several research studies show that well balanced diet and food that rank low in glycemic index are helpful in reducing teenage obesity.
Parents should keep in mind that it’s not scolding about being overweight but guiding on how to reduce weight that can really help. They should explain the importance of losing weight and gaining a positive image to their teen children. It’s the parents only that can help the teens live happy normal lives.
What are the Three Effects of Obesity?

the parents play a big part in their child’s weight. Giving them the food they want doesn’t show them that you love them. You need to show them the right way to eat and not stop at every fast food restaurant you see.
But it is also the child’s fault. They need to learn when to stop eating and not eating so many fatty foods. If they are teenagers they should know by now what and what not to eat.

Well, I think it’s the own childs fault because they need to take care of their own body. But I also think it’s their parents’ fault too because they need to take care of their children too.

I think the most important thing is to be mentally focused and then physically active. This will bring change!:)

Hey there is more too it than bad diet, kids are fat now due to many factors, lifestyle, pshchological, and physical factors. Blame the media, blame the parents, blame your genetics… This wont help tho! people need to chamge they way they live
October 6th, 2008 at 1:56 am
heyy im 15 years old and i am at my best figue now .. but wen i was 12 to about 14 .. i was getting up there in weight… i belive it was my fault .. but more blame goes to my parents! Now my momma cooks me organic foods and I go to the gym 3 times a week. The child has to put part into wanting to lose the wieght .. but the parents have to support them =]
October 27th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I think that the blame does not belong to anyone, it’s just a problem that needs to delt with.
October 31st, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Well,
It’s not all about what they eat. It’s also sometimes genetic. I feel bad for them because I know that they want to be thin and not shunned for how they look. We need to help them get better. The column was very helpful to my project.
Thank You,
C.D.

I am doing a large report on teenage obesity for my collage class at the UM and the fact that suprised me the most is that most obese children are over weight because a sleeping disorded. It preety much has nothing to do with diet, it mostly is lack of exercise and not getting enough sleep.

the teens should ensure that they engage themselves in a lot of physical activities and reduce their intake of junks it is not all foods that appeal to their senses are beneficial to their bodies coz when the after math sets in they will be the ones to be emotionally distressed not their mothers though they too contribute to it

hi everyone!ppl can u please tell me that if a 12 year old is a little bit overweight should he or she go to the gym?or is it like only for big ppl???please answer my question…..!!!!…..
January 8th, 2009 at 1:21 am
well actually fat people deserve to be fat because they eat so damn much
January 12th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
i believe it is more of the parents fault. The parents know better than to feed their children McDonald’s and let them watch TV, play video games, and surf the internet all day. Children don’t know the meaning of a balanced diet or the meaning of psychical activity. the meaning “playing” has changed from tag outside to playing the newest halo with your friend in china over the internet.
January 19th, 2009 at 1:40 am
I think its everyones fault .
If the child is eating tons of junk food and playing video games all day , its going to affect them .
Same with the parents . If they are too lazy to make dinner , so they get fast food all the time , its going to affect them .
I am 14 , and I believe that my metabalism is slowing down , so I am going to the gym and taking responsibility .

Hey Im 14. I am writing a essay on teen obesity. All of this information helps so much.
Everyone can help prevent obesity. It is all about not being lazy

I got the obesity virus in ‘96 when my grandma got it. she came over for the weekend for a family reunion and now we all have it. i knew i shouldn’t have eaten the potato salad she made. i thought that i saw her cough on it… but i got her back… i spit on her at her funeral.
March 12th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
I think it is the child’s fault, i used to be an obese teenager, i don’t blame my parents though because i ate the food!…I have lost the weight now though.
March 18th, 2009 at 8:31 pm
You just have to tell your children not to eat so much, because it will lead them to other kinds of diseases. But I love all kinds of people! Because if your a TRUE friend, then it wouldn’t matter about the weight.
March 31st, 2009 at 11:02 pm
you all are just to fat and lazy if u wanted you could do bettr.
April 15th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
it is your decision to be fat or be skinny if you stay inside you will become fat and lazy and your are nasty
April 20th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
people r idiots obesity is a disease shut up. unless you’ve fat the battle yourself you will never understand.
April 22nd, 2009 at 5:42 pm
I think obese people should exorcise more…
April 27th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
i also think that some people are large based on family….if everyone in their family is obese then its more likely they will be too…but it is definetly preventable and can be helped!!!
May 3rd, 2009 at 12:43 am
People who are obese should have a support program. Like people who will help them get into the habit of exercising and also eating right.
June 2nd, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Guys, you have to learn it’s not just about being lazy and eating junk food all the time. You can’t say anything about this if you haven’t been through it. For some people, losing weight could be the hardest thing they will ever do. So don’t hurt them because they don’t fit in to your requirements for the “perfect” person. They are still people.
June 12th, 2009 at 5:24 pm
bri shut up! obesity is a habit not a disease habits can be broken.stop eating
July 7th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Mike, you are correct. Most of my ex husband’s family are obese, including him, but their mom never set an example to eat healthy. I do set a good example of eating healthy, but my son still tends to overeat. Yes, it is genetic, but it can be controled. I took him to swimming lessons, but he does not go anymore, I may sign him up for dancing lessons. I know that he should be more active, so I have to set that example again.
July 16th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
I think that the television is the reason for all teen obesity because when kids watch TV they do not tend to exercise as much as they should and when they watch TV the tend to eat a lot more than they should… That is what I think
July 30th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
Teen obesity dose not just come from inactivity or overeating i over eat and i am not active but im not obese
August 11th, 2009 at 1:57 am
hey in 3rd grade I was really overweight, I was almost 100 pounds, and like 4′6″ but then people began to tease me and by sixth grade i was up to around 130 pounds, I didn’t have a whole lot of friends and the ones I had were overweight also so we just ate badly together, and it was about that time that I realized that I no longer wanted to be teased, so i began exercising and i lost some weight, now I’m a freshman and over the summer i decided to no longer eat desseret and i lost an additional 10 pounds, now i’m at around 150 pounds, and about 10%-15% body fat all because I decided I no longer wanted to be obese, and by the way everybody else in my family is obese, so it is not a virus or disease its all about the lifestyle, and it is the child’s choice, all the parents can do is support their decision, you can e-mail me at kornfan164@hotmail.com
August 19th, 2009 at 6:58 am
some of you people just dont get it. its not always the chubby kids fault. for example, im overweight but i excersize 1 hour every day and i eat under 2000 calories a day which is recomended for my age and i have to do that because of how slow my motabolism eat. I hate when people say that i am fat cause i eat too much cause thats not always the case and so what if some people eat to much and dont excersize enough its their bad habbits and they r very very hard to change. so next time one of you jerks calls someone fat think of all your bad habbits and if u were constantly made fun of for having them. Overeaters are like drinkers, smokers, gamblers, shopaholics, and etc. they know what they r doing is bad but its just so hard to stop and some of them to get lucky and have the power to change but dont hate on the people who dont. dont make them cry for something they cant help. Its about time overweight people we treated like everyone else. if you want to discuss anything i said my email is jackmanlink@yahoo.com

if someone’s overweight and their parents are overweight its not always because its genetic, they just all eat too much!!
September 8th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
shut up!
September 24th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Okay, so many of thos who posted before me seem to think that obesity can be prevented if you work for it. This is true, however, there is an obesity virus that wikll cause your body to gain weight until you gain a resistance to it, which would take about three months. Also, I am naturally a skinny person, but I have an odd inverse view on losing wieht. I have to fight to gain weight, which I need to be considerred healthy for my heighyt and age. I mean, I’m 6′4 and 135 pounds. It takes me a long time to gain weight. I lead an active lifestyle, but I don’t eat right. A rather charming thing often said in my house is ” if it’s not moving fast enough, Michael will eat it” so, like I said, an odd, inverse, view. However, every obese person cannot use the Obesity virus as an excuse, because only about every 1 in 3 obese people have the virus, which goes through the bodyu and causes fat cells to multiply, and you get a sore throat.
